FAQ

How do I unlock Nightmare King Grimm?
Complete the Troupe Master's flame-collecting ritual: gather the Nightmare Flames, defeat Troupe Master Grimm once, then equip Grimmchild and use the Dream Nail on Grimm himself — you'll find him asleep at the back of the big tent.
Does dying to Nightmare King Grimm lose my Geo?
No — it's a dream fight. You wake up at the tent with Geo and Shade intact; the only cost is pride.
What do I get for beating Nightmare King Grimm?
Grimmchild upgrades to its final form (Lv4), plus the Ritual achievement and the Troupe's departure storyline.
Can I fight him in Godhome?
Yes — he appears in the Hall of Gods and the Pantheon of Hallownest once unlocked, with Attuned/Ascended/Radiant variants like every boss.

Nightmare King Grimm is the fight The Grimm Troupe DLC was hiding — the dream-form of Troupe Master Grimm, the “terror of sleep” from the Seer’s verse, and the duel every endgame player measures themselves against. Every pattern you learned is back, faster, and everything hurts twice — nearly every hit deals two masks.

How do I reach the fight?

Finish the troupe’s ritual: collect the Nightmare Flames, beat Troupe Master Grimm in the tent, then equip the Grimmchild charm — the fight won’t start without it — and use the Dream Nail on Grimm himself, found asleep at the back of the big tent. His nightmare pulls you into a scarlet version of the arena.

Since it’s a dream fight, death just wakes you up — no Shade, no lost Geo, no broken Fragile charms. It’s the hardest of the game’s free-retry dream fights — which is why the beginner guide recommends using dream bosses as free pattern labs.

What changed from Troupe Master Grimm?

  • Fire Bats — now four instead of three, in a high-low-wide pattern; getting close during the cast makes him teleport and double-cast.
  • Dive Dash — the dive and dash both drag a damaging flame trail; the stand-up linger is your window.
  • Dash Uppercut — shorter wind-up, six fireballs on landing instead of five.
  • Cloak Spikes — arming faster, and he’s gone while they’re up; no punish window.
  • Flame Pillars — new attack: four pillars chase your position and leave lingering flames. He hangs still in the air while they erupt — this is your Abyss Shriek window if you’re under him.
  • Pufferfish — same balloon, much faster fireballs; hover near a wall and small-hop, never dash through.

What’s the winning strategy?

  1. Shade Cloak is mandatory kit. Most answers involve dash-through i-frames; fighting him without it is a self-imposed challenge run.
  2. Fire Bats is a donation. The short hop over bat two leaves three and four flying overhead harmlessly — then punish.
  3. Stagger breaks the pattern. 14 stagger-hits disperses him into a bat swarm — hit the red-eyed bat for up to 50 free damage.
  4. Take the small hits. Pogo taps and single slashes beat hero combos; his skitter punishes greed.

If Grimm is your last obstacle before the ending run, the boss order guide slots him cleanly after the Dreamers — and if you’re doing endings, the Radiance is the other dream-wall worth the same practice.
