FAQ

What should I do first in Hollow Knight?
Drop into the Forgotten Crossroads, find Cornifer humming in the left tunnels and buy his map, then push left to the False Knight. After that, head back to Dirtmouth and buy the Wayward Compass charm from Iselda so you can see yourself on the map.
How do I get more health in Hollow Knight?
Mask Shards — four of them forge one extra mask. They're scattered as secrets and shop items; the easiest early ones are sold by Sly in Dirtmouth — four shards for 150/500/800/1,500 Geo, later ones gated behind the Shopkeeper's Key.
How do I heal and where do I get soul?
Hitting enemies with the nail fills the SOUL meter (99 max); each Focus costs 33 — about a third of the gauge — to heal one mask. Vengeful Spirit and other spells also spend it — on bosses, decide whether your soul is for healing or damage.
What is the Dream Nail for?
It reads minds, harvests Essence, and lets you fight dream bosses and Warrior Dreams. It's also required for the Dream No More and Embrace the Void endings — you get it in the Resting Grounds.
Can I die permanently in Hollow Knight?
Normal mode: no — you drop a Shade and your Geo, and can recover both. Steel Soul mode (unlocked after beating the game) is permadeath.

Hollow Knight drops you into a ruin with a blunt nail and zero directions. The first hours in Hallownest go far smoother if you learn four systems early: maps, Geo, soul, and the pogo.

How do I stop getting lost?

Hallownest is big, and the map system is deliberately old-school:

  1. Find Cornifer in each new area — you’ll hear him humming. Buy his sketch map for a handful of Geo.
  2. Buy the Wayward Compass from Iselda in Dirtmouth (220 Geo) — it pins your position on the map. Then buy each new area’s finished map from her once you’ve seen it.
  3. Benches save + update maps. Sitting also swaps charms — get used to both.

How does money and death work?

Enemies drop Geo, and dying leaves a Shade where you fell holding all of it — die again before recovering it and it’s gone. Early on: never carry more than you’re willing to lose, and prefer spending at Dirtmouth between pushes. (Not into the bank — just buy things.)

Charms are your build: 45 exist, you start with 3 notches and can reach 11. Salubra in the Crossroads sells extra notches as your collection grows. Equip what you’re actually using — Gathering Swarm early pays for itself forever.

What upgrades should I chase first?

  • Nail upgrade #1 — the Nailsmith in the City of Tears reforges your nail for 250 Geo, no ore needed (5 → 9 damage). See all Pale Ore locations for the later upgrades.
  • Mothwing Cloak (dash) — Greenpath, after the Hornet Protector fight.
  • Mantis Claw (wall-jump) — Mantis Village in the Fungal Wastes.
  • Vengeful Spirit → Shade Soul — your ranged option.
  • Nail-bouncing is a mechanic, not a trick — down-slash on enemies, spikes, and mushrooms to bounce. The game assumes you know it.

What is the main quest?

Kill three Dreamers — Monomon (Teacher’s Archive), Lurien (Watcher’s Spire), Herrah (Deepnest) — then enter the Temple of the Black Egg and face what’s inside. For a sensible route through the early bosses, see the recommended boss order; the Radiance page covers what’s waiting at the end of the dream path.

What are the biggest beginner mistakes?

  1. Ignoring the compass — it’s a charm slot well spent in every new area.
  2. Hoarding soul “for later” instead of healing mid-fight.
  3. Fighting dream bosses at 1 mask — in dream fights you don’t lose Geo, so they’re safe labs for learning patterns (the Radiance fight excepted — that one’s a real death).
  4. Missing the Grimm Troupe — the red tent in Dirtmouth leads to Nightmare King Grimm and the best charm line in the game.
