Silksong Beginner Guide — 12 Things to Know Before Pharloom Eats You
Silksong beginner guide: bind healing, crests and tools, rosaries, wish boards, and the early upgrade order — everything a new Hornet needs in Act 1.
FAQ
How does healing work in Silksong?
What should I buy first in Silksong?
What does the Wish board do?
Is Silksong harder than Hollow Knight?
How do I get to Act 3?
Silksong teaches fast and punishes faster — enemies deal two-mask damage early, benches are farther apart, and the Last Judge ends Act 1 with a difficulty spike that became the game’s first community-wide wall. These are the systems worth learning first.
How does the silk-and-bind loop work?
Attacking with the needle fills Hornet’s silk spool; a full spool powers either a Bind (heal three masks, almost instant) or a Silk Skill. Because a full bar is a full heal, the optimal rhythm is aggressive — trade hits, fill the spool, bind, repeat. Hoarding silk “just in case” is the most common beginner mistake.
Tools are the other half: red tools are weapons (throwing pins, bombs), yellow tools are utility, blue tools are defensive. They’re equipped to your current Crest — and each crest’s slot layout is different.

Which crest should I use early?
- Hunter (default) — balanced, and Eva in Weavenest Atla can evolve it.
- Wanderer — the closest thing to the original Hollow Knight moveset; grab it early via the Wormways shortcut if the diagonal pogo is tilting you.
- Reaper — slower arcs but extra silk on hit; the safest bind-economy crest in Act 1.
You can’t go permanently wrong — crests swap freely at benches, and a bad matchup costs you a runback, not the crest.
How do rosaries and banking work?
Rosaries are Pharloom’s currency, and loose rosaries are dropped where you die. Two habits make Act 1 painless:
- Convert rosaries to strings. Vendors sell Rosary Strings — banked currency that survives death.
- Learn the Bellways. Bellway stations are Pharloom’s fast-travel; unlock every one you pass, since several Wishes and the Act 3 chain force long trips.
What should I do before fighting the Last Judge?
The judge is where most first playthroughs stall — Screen Rant called it “the hardest challenge up to that point,” and the runback alone is a skill check. Before the Grand Gate:
- Ring all five Bellshrines in the Blasted Steps (required to open the fight at all).
- Buy the Magma Bell tool — since Patch 5 it negates all of the boss’s fire damage, which trivializes Phase 2’s Blazing Rings.
- Craft a red tool you actually use; Silk Skills can hit the Judge through its thurible spin.
- Bank your rosaries first — the runback is long.
Full breakdown in the Last Judge boss guide, and if you’re chasing the true ending later, keep an eye on your Quest Point total — the Act 3 unlock wants 17 of them.
What are the biggest beginner mistakes?
- Sitting on silk instead of binding — a dead Hornet’s unused spool heals nobody.
- Ignoring Wishes — they’re not optional filler; Quest Points gate Act 3.
- Fighting every optional boss immediately — Savage Beastfly will still be there after you have Cling Grip and an upgraded needle.
- Skipping the Lost Fleas — the caravan milestones pay out real upgrades, and the caravan’s location feeds into the Act 3 requirements.
