FAQ

What is the best crest in Silksong?
For most players, Wanderer (early, the closest thing to the Hollow Knight moveset) or Reaper (extra silk on hit, best aerial attack). Shaman dominates Act 3 builds once unlocked. There is no wrong answer — swap at benches freely.
How many crests are in Silksong?
Seven equippable crests — Hunter, Wanderer, Reaper, Beast, Witch, Architect, Shaman — plus the Vesticrest, a bonus tool-slot layer given by Eva in Weavenest Atla.
What do Memory Lockets do?
Each Memory Locket permanently unlocks one tool slot on one crest of your choice, done at any bench. They're rare — spend them on the crest you actually main.
How do I get the Vesticrest?
Eva in Weavenest Atla grants it once you've unlocked 12 tool slots across your crests (excluding Hunter). It holds a yellow tool that stays equipped regardless of crest; at 20 slots she upgrades it to also hold a blue tool.
Which crest gives the Hollow Knight moveset?
The Wanderer crest — found in the Chapel of the Wanderer in Bonegrave, reachable early via a Simple Key door into the Wormways. Its downward slash is the closest thing to the classic Hollow Knight pogo.

Crests are Silksong’s loadout system: each one swaps Hornet’s attack arcs, down-slash, and bind ability, and carries its own layout of red/yellow/blue tool and Silk Skill slots. There are seven crests plus the slot-bonus Vesticrest — here’s every one, where it lives, and which to main.

Where is every crest in Silksong?

Crest Location Requirements Identity
Hunter Default — Balanced starter; Eva in Weavenest Atla can evolve it
Wanderer Chapel of the Wanderer, Bonegrave Simple Key + Swift Step (or Cling Grip + Drifter’s Cloak) Closest to the original Hollow Knight moveset — vertical pogo
Reaper Chapel of the Reaper, west Greymoor Reachable Act 1 Heavy arcing slashes; reaps bonus silk on hit after binding
Beast Chapel of the Beast, east Hunter’s March Drifter’s Cloak; guarded by Savage Beastfly Savage slashes; bind enters a lifesteal fury
Witch Bilewater → Shellwood → Greymoor Twisted Bud chain: pick it up in Bilewater, give it to Greyroot in Shellwood (Rite of Rebirth), then clear the Infestation Operation at Yarnaby Whip-like needle sweeps; roots leech life
Architect Underworks — buy from the Twelfth Architect Act 2 access + 25 tools owned Screw-needle drill; spend silk to craft tools mid-fight
Shaman Above the Ruined Chapel Act 3 Casts the needle forward; runes supercharge Silk Skills

Which crest should I use?

Early game — Wanderer. It removes the diagonal down-slash entirely — the closest thing to the classic pogo Hollow Knight veterans know — and its fast attack speed means faster silk. For returning players it’s the closest thing to coming home; it’s also the earliest crest you can realistically grab.

Mid game — Reaper. Slower but hits like a truck, the aerial attack has the best hang time in the game for skip-pogoing, and its bind refund keeps Silk Skills flowing. If Wanderer feels thin, Reaper is the power pick.

Late game — Architect or Shaman. Architect turns shell shards into disposable artillery (three red slots once unlocked); Shaman triples down on Silk Skills for Act 3’s endgame bosses like Lost Lace.

How do tool slots and Memory Lockets work?

Each crest starts with some slots open and some locked — the locked dots are filled by Memory Lockets, spent at benches, one locket per slot, per crest. Lockets are scarce, so commit to a main crest before spreading them around.

The Vesticrest sits outside the system: Eva awards it once you’ve unlocked 12 slots across non-Hunter crests, adding a yellow slot that works no matter which crest you wear; 20 slots upgrades it with a blue slot too.

What’s the fastest early crest route?

  1. Buy the Simple Key from Pebb in Bone Bottom.
  2. In Deep Docks, grab Swift Step.
  3. Take the key door into the Wormways, drop to the bottom, exit left into Bonegrave.
  4. Clear the Chapel of the Wanderer’s small gauntlet — Wanderer is yours.

That one trip converts the whole early game into familiar Hollow Knight muscle memory. If you’re weighing crest choice against the Act 1 wall, see the Last Judge guide — and check how crests feed into Act 3 prep before you commit your Lockets.
